To meet Bishop Jean V. Wilson, D. Min. is to know that she is imbued with a life dedicated to God. Her presence invites the Holy Spirit into our presence. I met her as one of fourteen Doctor of Ministry student in a cohort I lead on the theme, “Minister as Spiritual Director.” Early in the year 2000, we gathered at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. Immediately, we knew that we were part of something quite special. Half of the group were African-American and half were Euro-Americans.
Our denominations ranged widely, including United Methodist, Baptist, Unity, Cumberland Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and others. Over the next two and one-half years, we learned not only from the curriculum but also from one another in remarkable ways.
As you read the project Dr. Wilson conducted, you will find a way forward within your congregation for profound spiritual awakening. She shows us one of the most direct ways to make an immediate impact within our congregations by training small group leaders in methods of prayer and inviting these leaders to gather groups around them.

This project is being presented with the hope that it will help spiritually deficient churches that wish to revitalize the spiritual life of their congregations. Asbury Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, the context, was an example of a church in need of a revitalized spiritual life. In other words, it was a congregation that needed a closer relationship with God. This project proposes that prayer and Bible study in a consistent manner will foster revitalized spiritual life in a congregation.
I would like to give you a little background regarding my healing and accepting the Lord Jesus as my Savior. I believe this is when my relationship with the Lord became real. At the age of 22, the Lord healed my body. It happened on a Sunday morning after suffering with a nervous condition for over six months. On that morning, after trying to prepare Sunday dinner, I realized that I was too weak to continue so I decided to go back to bed. It was at that time that I found the Bible open on the bed; it was opened to St. John Chapter 14.1. I began to read that passage of scripture and it was at that time that the Word of God literally became “alive” for the very first time in my life. The Word began to heal my body starting at the top of my head and the feeling went down to my feet.
